Went there yesterday for the first time. We were asked if it was our first time when we got to the counter. Phil explained various things regarding the menu. Great, classical hot dog stands need one person that is associated with the place. This place definitely has that in Phil!

The place is small. In nicer wether you can sit outside. There about 10 tables. Yesterday a bit too cold.

There were six of us so we ended up with a variety of items. A couple of char dogs, two grilled salamis, a double fatso (burger) and a Mac and cheese with salami. We also had the shoestrings, not on the menu, but really good.

The salami sand was great. The Mac and cheese with salami, OMG! The cheese for the fries was outstanding! The burger juicy and very tasty. The cheese for the fries is Vern’s from Wisconsin. I have always thought this was the best. I am told that the shrimp po boy is very good as well. None of us had this. Next time!

Phil adds just the right amount of personality. In the middle of serving a crowded restaurant he starts giving out hot dog gum. Old school! He also doesn’t hesitate to tell the uninformed where things come from, as far as tradition. He credits the great hot dog joints of the past.

It is hard to build and create a “joint” kudos to Phil for accomplishing just that. It’s hard to imagine how many hot dog places there are between Deerfield and Phil’s last stand. I would make the drive anytime. I grew up spending my Saturday’s at Poochie’s in Skokie. To me the gold standard. I also spent six years in the hot dog business, so I have high standards and expectations”

This place is the real deal. This is great solid classic Chicago food.
Go there! Enjoy! Don’t tell your cardiologist! Better yet take him/her with!!

This is GREAT Chicago food! Phil has hit it on the head!

Five days since we opened and Phil said

“Come back tomorrow and try the jumbo shrimp”

Three days since the corner of Oakley and Chicago

I realized a dream, and had to tell you

Yesterday you’d stopped by for a Fatso burger

But it’ll still be two late nights till I’ll see you again

The Barenaked Ladies had it right with their hit single “one week” and we thought what better way to emulate our success than paying homage to the song. Phil is busier than he has been in years and he is loving every minute of it, spending every waking moment making sure every order is grilled, fried, and served to perfection.

We have all been involved though. The Hoob is busy becoming a fresh-cut fry sensei, PJ is busy supporting the stand with his own funds after a hard night of partying, and the lines have formed to try the five off-menu items and to see if anyone has been brave enough to take on Fatso’s Challenge. So far two have entered the arena and the food has been left standing with those two unfortunate souls slinking away no longer famished, but bulging at the waist band.

Soon we foresee the five-special items and the tip gong becoming a neighborhood code, a password to a secret club of the impressively satiated. Phil’s Last Stand is also excited to adding a T-shirt to our menu selection.
